Navy Overview


The United States Navy was founded in 1775. In 1798 the Department of the Navy was brought to life. Since its beginning, the Navy has played a major role in history's warfare. This important part of the military also includes the U.S. Coast Guard and Marine Corps. In time of war, the navy protects from the sky and water utilizing both aircraft and massive ships.

Brave men and women from all walks of life enlist in this military field to serve and protect their country. Some undertake intense training at the United States Naval Academy where they learn the physical skills and academics needed to serve their country. Most dedicate years of service to the Navy. They serve well into retirement.

The opportunities for military career advancement are great. Service men and women begin their careers in operating forces and can move into a great number of command positions. Others use the knowledge gained from the Navy to begin successful careers in engineering, medicine and many other fields.
