Special Warfare Officer Continuation Pay

Special Warfare Officer Continuation Pay
is available to active duty Officers who have a Qualified Occupational Specialty that is identified by the DoD as a Wartime Specialization. If the officer agrees to remain on duty for at least one year past the year of his active duty service obligation, the officer is entitled to receive a retention bonus known as “Extended Period of Active Duty Pay.” “Officer Continuation Pay” is similar but it is geared towards career military officers. To be eligible for the Officer Continuation Pay bonus, the officer must be in pay grade O-3 or O-4 and must not be on a list for promotion at the time the agreement is drawn up and authorized. The officer must also have completed at least 6 but no more than 14 years of active duty service.

The amount of these retention bonuses cannot exceed $15,000 a year for each year covered in the agreement. This bonus is considered an additional pay and will not effect the payment of other bonuses or allowances.

The officer enters into an agreement with the Secretary of his Department and can be paid either in a lump sum amount equal to half the total amount of the agreement with the balance paid in yearly installments, or payments can be arranged on a graduated scale. The officer can be responsible for repayment if he/she does not finish the entire period of the agreement.

Another type of specialized retention bonus for officers is known as Surface Warfare Officer Continuation Pay available to eligible Warfare Officers serving on active duty in either the Navy or the Navy Reserve. To be eligible for this pay, the officer must be a qualified Surface Warfare Officer who has been selected for an assignment on a surface vessel and is within one year of completing that active duty commitment. An officer who agrees to complete one or more tours in addition to the current service agreement can be paid a bonus of up to $50,000. This bonus can be paid in addition to any other bonuses or allowances.
