TRICARE Standard and Extra Overview

TRICARE Standard and Extra are two of the TRICARE military health care plans available to non-active-duty beneficiaries. You do not need to enroll because coverage in the standard plan is automatic as long as you keep your information up to date. You can visit any authorized TRICARE provider with these plans, but care at a military facility is based on the amount of space they have available. These plans do not require you to get a referral prior to seeking care, but certain types of treatment will require prior authorization.

If you see an in-network provider, you are using TRICARE Extra. You will pay a smaller out-of-pocket fee and have the paperwork filed for you by the provider. If you visit an out-of-network provider, you are using the TRICARE standard plan and will incur a higher cost.

The reason to use TRICARE standard or extra is if you are not an active service member, you live in an area which does not offer the TRICARE Prime health care coverage, or you want to visit an out-of-network provider.
