TRICARE Prime Overview

TRICARE Prime is considered the top of the line TRICARE plan. The Standard and Extra plans tend to have less coverage for the cost. The Prime costs a little bit more in some cases, such as when one retires; but, the main reason that some individuals do not sign up for TRICARE Prime is that it is not available in all areas.

If you are an active duty service member, or child or spouse of an active duty member, you will pay no enrollment fees or out of pocket costs. This is a pretty good plan when you compare it to most civilian health care plans. Another thing that you may want to take into account is that the costs you have to pay as a retiree are not as great as they might seem. There is an annual enrollment fee for keeping or getting into the Prime coverage, whereas the Standard and Extra plans do not have an enrollment fee. The Standard and Extra plans do require an annual deductible, and the Prime plan does not. Determining which plan is best for you may depend on your usage history.
