Veterans Upward Bound Eligibility

Aimed at helping veterans refresh their academic skills and prepare to successfully complete the college degree of their choice, the U.S. Department of Education offers a number of free skills development courses through the Veterans Upward Bound program.

To qualify for Veterans Upward Bound programming, a veteran must:

  • Have served 181 or more days in active duty; and
  • Have been discharged on/after January 31, 1955, under conditions other than dishonorable; and
  • Meet the U.S. Department of Education criteria for Low-income and/or must be a first-generation potential college graduate; and
  • Demonstrate academic need for Veterans Upward Bound; and
  • Meet other local eligibility criteria as written in the veteran’s local VUB project's Approved Grant Proposal (i.e. county or city of residence)
