Accredited Financial Counselor Certification Scholarship

Interested in finance? Interested in helping people with their finances? Are you a military spouse? Save and Invest can help you start your career by providing you a fellowship for certification as an accredited financial counselor.

The FINRA Foundation Military Spouse Foundation Program provides financial assistance to military spouses to become an accredited financial counselor (AFC) through the Association for Financial Counseling, Planning, and Education (AFCPE). The fellowship covers:

  • Enrollment and telecommunication study session fees;
  • Tuition for two AFCPE online courses: Financial Counseling and Debt Management, and Personal Finance;
  • And up to two testing fees for each course.

There are two additional requirements to achieve the accreditation; 1000 hours of practicum (either paid or volunteer) and compliance with the organization’s Code of Ethics.

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be a current or surviving spouse of an active duty, reservist, or retired member of the armed forces, Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service, or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration;
  • Hold a high school diploma or G.E.D.;
  • And knowledge of military protocol.

Preference is given to military spouses who already have previous experience in the financial and credit education industry (particularly with military clientele) and some college experience  up to and including an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Those who already hold any securities licenses are ineligible for the fellowship (for more on preferences and ineligibilities, check the Fellowship’s FAQ webpage.

Earning an accredited financial counselor certification provides multiple opportunities for employment and volunteer opportunities. This accreditation is national, providing ease of job transfer between states and bases when you are relocated to a new duty station. AFCs work in non-profits, schools, and government agencies as well as private financial institutions, helping people improve their financial education and help develop a plan to achieve their financial goals.

Save and Invest is a non-profit organization that assists military members and their families (and most recently, civilians) in becoming financially literate and helping them to develop financial goals. The program was developed by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Investor Education Foundation as part of its Military Financial Education Project.
