Resume Writing Tips

Resume Writing Tips

Writing a resume is a grueling task. Your military experience hash prepared you for this grueling task. Below are some tips to help you write a brilliant resume:

  • Get help. If possible attend job assistance training before you leave the service. Also contact your Transition Assistance Center and take a TAP workshop. Use the Center’s counselors. Ask civilian friends and family, especially those in management positions, to critique your resume.
  • Use a civilian resume template. Get a copy of your Verification of Military Experience and Training (VMET) and use it as the basis for your resume.
  • Translate your skills and positions out of military terminology and into civilian jargon. Use the civilian title with the military title in brackets behind for clarity.
  • Tailor your resume and cover letter for every job. Explain why your skills are suited for the present job.
  • Emphasize the positive skills the military has taught you that translate well to the civilian work place. For example, leadership, teamwork and discipline.
  • Down play the more brutal aspects of your military service.
  • Under Work Experience, concentrate on what you did in your position rather than on the job title or how the job related to your command.
  • Education is sometimes not a high point.  If that is the case for you, put Education at the end, even if the template suggests otherwise.
  • Job-related Training Courses should be included-often above Education. Many employers place more emphasis on job training than they do traditional education.
  • Job-related Knowledge and Skills is another important section and it too might come before Education.
  • List accomplishments and awards clearly at the end of the resume.
  • Write concisely and clearly. Use correct grammar and spelling. Proof read everything you send three times.
