Spouse Medical Benefits Eligibility

An important thing to consider when it comes to the medical benefits for spouses of active duty service members is eligibility. The TRICARE prime plan is the plan that provides automatic enrollment for any active duty service member. A major disadvantage to the Prime plan, as compared with the Standard or Plus plans, as far as it concerns families and spouses, is that it is not as widely available.

Civilian outpatient as well as inpatient care is available for any of the following types of recipients:

  • Family members of active duty service members are of course eligible to be covered under the standard medical plan.
  • Family members of an active duty, uniformed service member that died, or a member that has retired are eligible for benefits.
  • In some cases certain individuals such as divorced spouses are eligible for military medical benefits.

If you are uncertain about your elegibility status as the spouse of a member of the United States Armed Forces, it is important to check either in person, or through the TRICARE Medical benefit website.

An important thing that many people do not thing about is the availability of dental care benefits. The dental plan that is offered is truly top notch. It provides entirely for any type of emergency, diagnostic, and preventive services that one many need. This exludes sealants which require a 20% payment by the beneficiary as this plan only covers 80%. The maximum annual benefit coverage is $1,200 for all routine dental care. The lifetime maximum benefit is $1,500. It is important to remember that former spouses, parents in-law, parents, foreign personnel and disabled veterans are not eligible for the TRICARE Dental Plan.
