Tuition Top-Up Overview

The Top-Up Program is a program that uses part of your eligible GI Bill benefits to “top up” any outstanding college tuition or fees that are not covered by the Tuition Assistance program. The amount of the benefit is usually the difference between the total cost of a college class and the amount of TA support provided by the military.

You are eligible for the Top-Up program if you are:
  • Approved for both Federal Military Tuition Assistance and the Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty benefits
  • A GI Bill participant
  • On active duty and have served a minimum of two full years

A couple of things worth noting: The amount paid by the military plus the amount paid by the VA cannot be more than the total cost of the class. Also, if you use the Tuition Top-Up Program, your regular GI Bill benefits will be reduced.
