How to Apply for Coast Guard Tuition Assistance (TA)

Joining the Coast Guard as a way to serve your country is a very honorable thing to do. The American people and the Coast Guard appreciate the sacrifices you must make and do as much as possible to help you achieve your goals both while you are an active member and after you have returned to civilian life. The Coast Guard Tuition Assistance (TA) program was designed to help active duty; reserve and civilian employees pursue their technical skills and other educational interests.

Like most everything in the military, you must follow specific procedures if you want to apply for Coast Guard Tuition Assistance. The Coast Guard will pay up to $4500 per fiscal year towards your pursuit of higher education at an accredited college or other institution of higher learning. In short, you must go to the USCG, fill out a CG-4147 that is processed ASAP through the NETPDTC in Pensacola, and, if all goes smoothly, will result in your being presented with a CGI-1560. You take the CGI-1560 to registration and NETPDTC pays the approved amount of tuition assistance to the institution of higher learning.

Just in case you are a little confused by the last sentence or two, please refer to the definitions listed below.
