DANTES Career Guidance Materials and Interest Inventories

DANTES also distributes a number of guidance materials and inventories that you can find at your local education center, Navy College office, and family support centers. These materials can be used to provide counseling to service members and their family members.

The Interest and Aptitude inventories are detailed questionnaires that, once completed, can measure a service member’s level of interest in various academic areas and careers.

There are six guidance assessments that a service member can take advantage of through DANTES, a local Education Service Office or Navy College representative. All of these assessments with the exception of Holland’s Self-Directed Search are available online.

  • Campbell Interest and Skills Survey (CISS)
  • Career Assessment Inventory (CAI)
  • Holland's Self-Directed Search
  • Kuder Career Search with Person Match
  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
  • Strong Confidence Inventory

Another assessment tool available to service members is DISCOVER. DISCOVER is a comprehensive career planning program located at 232 military installations worldwide that DANTES provides at no cost to education centers. It allows individuals to use personal information to interact with the computer to reach decisions regarding educational and vocational choices.

DISCOVER can help service members plan their education and/or transition to civilian jobs while they are in military service. Through a series of questions, it measures a service member’s likes, abilities and values. It then can suggest occupational paths and provide information on jobs, skills, and schools.
