ACE Credits by Branch of Service

A number of colleges and universities award academic credit to students who have served in the military. Funded by the Department of Defense and coordinated through DANTES, the American Council on Education (ACE) performs evaluations on coursework, institutions and occupational specialties to determine how much academic credit should be applied.

Every branch of service has a unique system for recording experienced-based credits. Below is a list of credits sorted by service branch.

Army

  • The Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript system is available only to enlisted personnel. It records credits from training as well as from any standardized tests.
  • Officers apply for credits by filling out Form DD 295 (Application for Evaluation of Learning).

Navy and Marines

  • The Navy and Marine Corps use the Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript to record experience and academic credits.

Air Force

  • The Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) records training, experience and standardized test scores.

Coast Guard

  • To receive a transcript, the Coast Guard Institute (CGI) requires each Service member to submit an enrollment form and documentation of training courses.

Veterans

  • Usually may use the transcript program required by their former branch of service. In instances where the veteran is not eligible for AARTS, SMART, CCAF or CGI systems, a form DD-295 and DD-214 discharge document must be submitted in order to receive experience-based credit.
