Servicemembers' and Veterans' Group Life Insurance

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is term life insurance available to all members of the military. It is purchased by the military from Prudential and is administered by the Office of Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (OSGLI). SGLI does not interfere with any other benefits or entitlements available to service members through the military. SGLI also does not interfere with any additional military or private insurance policies that might be purchased.

SGLI is available to active duty members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Reserves, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, cadet/midshipmen in the four Service Academies, members of the Reserve Officer Training Corps and Members of the Public Health Service who have worked full-time active duty for at least 31 days. Part-time coverage is available to Reserve members who do not meet either the 31-day requirements or the special Reserve requirements listed in the Servicemembers’ and Veterans’ Group Life Insurance Handbook.

Active duty personnel and members of the Ready Reserve, National Guard and training corps are automatically covered by the military for $400,000. The program is low cost but any service member can opt out of the program or reduce their benefits amount by $50,000 dollar increments using the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Election and Certificate, Form SGLV 8286. Form SLGV 8286 must be filled out in any case to designate one or more beneficiaries for the life insurance policy.

SGLI policy-holders can convert their life insurance to Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) after discharge. VGLI premiums are higher than SGLI, and unlike SGLI, the age of the insured person is factored into the rates of VGLI.

Servicemembers’ and Veterans’ Group Life Insurance provides members of the military with a reliable and inexpensive form of insurance for their beneficiaries. Given the inherent risks of military service, having access to such life insurance provides great peace of mind and is one of the best benefits of serving in the military.
